Halloween costumes inspired by literature

literatureHalloween takes place on the 31st of October every year and is a celebration that the whole family can enjoy. Over the years there have been so many things to inspire Halloween fancy dress such as ghost stories, legends, movies and of course Literature. The original Frankenstein was a novel written by Mary Shelly. Although a shop which is on the high street can be used to buy Halloween costumes, there are many websites which have a huge range. Many people like to dress up as their favourite movie characters at Halloween. However, literary characters have also inspired Halloween costumes for many years and here we take a look at the best.

Little Red Riding Hood

Charles Perrault’s tale of a young girl and a wolf has been popular for generations, in particular with those who want to have a theme at Halloween for their own costumes. A family could adopt it where a daughter dresses as Little Red Riding Hood. Her brother or father can be the wolf. A Little Red Riding Hood theme is also ideal for adults who want to dress the same as each other. For a stag party, the groom-to-be can be Little Red Riding Hood and many of his friends could each be the wolf.

Peter Pan

There are many characters from J.M. Barrie’s novel Peter Pan which someone could dress as at Halloween. They could buy Halloween costumes such as one which is similar to what Peter wore. Along with the boy from Neverland who never grows up, a group of friends could be Wendy, Captain Hook and Smee plus such Lost Boys as Tootles and Curly. Although these costumes can be made at home, they can also be bought online. A retailer might have a complete Peter Pan costume which has green tights and a hat. It could also have a long white dress which Wendy wears. For something completely different, choose a mermaid costume. Not only is this a popular costume but mermaids are also in Neverland.

Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, which was published in the late 19th century, continues to be very popular. The first screen adaptation was Nosferatu in 1922 but all characters were replaced because of copyright. Although a costume which Count Orlok wore can be worn instead, one which is similar to what Christopher Lee sported is more popular. In fact, a father and son could wear a Dracula costume because an online retailer typically has them in multiple sizes.

Just like Dracula, there have been many film adaptations of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Dr Frankenstein’s monster was made famous by Boris Karloff in the 1931 original movie and the costume which he wears can be worn at Halloween. When black attire is purchased, a face covered with green paint and bolts attached to a person’s neck, a person will look just like Frankenstein courtesy of their costume.

Harry Potter

There are many characters in J.K. Rowling’s series of Harry Potter books to dress up as at Halloween. Although J.K. Rowling wrote seven novels, eight films were made which starred the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Alan Rickman, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. There are many costumes which can be selected. Along with Harry, Ron and Hermione, a Lord Voldemort costume can be worn or an outfit that Hagrid wears. Although the last Harry Potter book and film was released several years ago, they are still very popular. As a result, a Harry Potter-inspired costume will be instantly recognisable for a long time.
